At least 18 people have died after a sudden flood swept down the Bhotekoshi River through Rasuwa district in northern Nepal on 26 August, damaging settlements and critical infrastructure before moving downstream into the Trishuli corridor.
Nepal Police said the 18 bodies recovered by 15:45 local time included one person in Rasuwa, seven in Nuwakot, six in Dhading and four in Gorkha. Identification was still pending for several of those killed, and the balance may change as searches continue.
The Nepal Tourism Board reported 384 tourists out of contact in Rasuwa: 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepalis travelling towards Gosainkunda or Kailash Mansarovar. Authorities also reported police personnel out of contact. These are communications and tracing figures, not a confirmed death toll.
Researchers and disaster officials are investigating whether an ice-and-rock avalanche blocked the Lhende River and released a sudden surge downstream. The assessment is preliminary. Authorities have not completed a final determination of the flood's trigger, origin or sequence.
The Nepali Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have deployed search teams and helicopters. Medical and road-rescue teams are working in affected areas, downstream communities have been urged away from riverbanks, and exposed households are being moved to safer places.
