Families escaping the Bald Range wildfire need urgent support.

The fast-moving wildfire spread into Summerland and neighbouring South Okanagan communities after winds intensified on 7 August. On 9 August, the entire District of Summerland, covering 5,688 properties, remained under evacuation order as police reported one death during the wildfire.

  1. Access remains restricted as evacuee support continues

    The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen said closed roads, evacuation areas and active fire zones remained off-limits. Temporary access permits were the only current process for entering restricted areas; applications did not guarantee access, and residents were told to wait for approval and keep checkpoints clear for emergency responders. Emergency Support Services registration, a reception centre in Penticton and a daily comfort centre remained available.

  2. Police confirm one death during the Bald Range wildfire

    Police confirmed that an 80-year-old Meadow Valley resident died suddenly while attempting to leave her home with a family member during the wildfire. Police said they believed the death resulted from the wildfire, while the BC Coroners Service was investigating to confirm the nature of the death. No other fatalities were known to police at the time of the release.

  3. Evacuation order expands as emergency support continues

    The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen said an evacuation order issued at 11:00 PDT covered the Brent Lake and Shingle Creek area. By 17:45, 451 regional-district properties were under evacuation order and 1,065 were under alert. The entire District of Summerland, covering 5,688 properties, remained under order. On Penticton Indian Band land, 38 properties remained under order and 1,082 under alert. A comfort centre in Penticton was open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 for evacuees.

  4. Evacuation orders cover thousands of properties

    The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen reported that the entire District of Summerland, covering 5,688 properties, was under evacuation order. A further 416 properties in the regional district were under order and 1,100 were under alert. On Penticton Indian Band land, 38 properties were under order and 1,082 were under alert. Three reception centres were open for evacuees.

  5. British Columbia declares a provincial state of emergency

    The Province of British Columbia declared a state of provincial emergency as the wildfire remained extremely active. Officials confirmed significant losses of homes and property, said residents had been trapped behind the fire perimeter and reported that air evacuations were continuing.

  6. Bald Range wildfire grows rapidly after first report

    The Bald Range wildfire, incident K51490, was first reported in the early evening. Intensifying winds pushed the fire rapidly into Summerland and surrounding valleys, prompting urgent evacuation action across affected communities.
